Aeropress
Isaac’s approach.
Initial Thoughts / Set Up
When Isaac approaches the Aeropress he goes for the inverted method! He says, “This makes it completely full-immersion. Otherwise you risk the some of the coffee being pushed through the brew basket prematurely.”
Isaac’s recipe utilizes heavy agitation along with a higher brew temp. One could relate this method to espresso for these reasons.
Start by placing the paper filter in the brew basket and rinsing it. This removes any potential paper residue and pre-heats everything. Be sure to toss that rinse water, maybe in a nearby plant!
Honing In
Here are the intervals:
17g of coffee
00:00 pour to the 3 line and stir
00:45 pour to the top
01:15 stir 3x
01:45 stir 3x
02:00 screw cap on, flip, and start plunge
02:15 plunge completed
Finishing / Post Brew
If the goal is to recreate Isaac’s recipe, here are a couple of notes of where errors could have been made.
Issue: plunge time was too short. Solution: adjust grind finer.
Issue: the coffee tastes muddy. Solution: coarser grind, or using two paper filters instead of one.
Aeropress
joseph’s approach.
Initial Thoughts / Set Up
When Joseph approaches the Aeropress he also goes for the inverted method.
Joseph treats his Aeropress brews as espresso-like in plunge times but looks for tea-likeness in the brew body.
Start by placing TWO paper filters in the brew basket and rinsing it. This removes any potential paper residue and pre-heats everything. Be sure to toss that rinse water, maybe in a nearby plant!
Honing In
Here are the intervals:
18g of coffee
00:00 pour saturate grounds then stir
00:25 pour to the top
01:45 one to two solid stirs
02:00 screw cap on, flip, and plunge with fast, even pressure
end time can vary, but usually aiming for a specific window (could be 10 - 15 seconds, could be 25 - 45 seconds) *much like a timed espresso shot.
Finishing / Post Brew
If the goal is to recreate Joseph’s recipe, here are a couple of notes of where errors could have been made.
Issue: coffee is too tea-like. Solution: grind finer and stir more in the second half of the brew.
Issue: grounds keep ending up in the final brew. Solution: pay closer attention to how the cap is being screwed on, and make sure the two filters are perfectly aligned on the basket.
